One of our long term goals is to be self- sufficient. In order to reach this goal we purchased a 6.5 hector farm outside of Santo Domingo. As of now we have planted 2 hectors of black pepper, 1 hector of mayacua (passion fruit) and 1 hector of yuca. We have hired Carlos, who is working the farm and using his expertis to help us. We met Carlos in Las Villegas while we were doing adopt-a-block. Both Carlos and his wife, Viviana, got baptized and are members of the church. Carlos, Viviana and their three children live out on the farm. On the weekends they take the 45 minute trip from the farm to Las Villegas to help grow the church.
We started an aguaphonics system about a year and a half ago. We have grown lettuce, tomatoes, peppers and much more. Though this process we realized how much the people loved and wanted to buy our fish, so we started a fish (Talapia) farm. We sell our fish at a discounted rate to church members so they are able to eat cheaper and also have the opportunity go and sell more fish as a mirco business to help provide for their families.
