Santo Domingo is a large city about 3 hours west from the capital of Ecuador, Quito. It is a tropical, hot, wet climate and the rainy season is from Dec. to May. Even though Ecuador has a lot of natural resources Santa Martha, where we are working is very poor. Most of the people that live in the barrios do not have an education, a lot of them do not know how to read or write, they drop out of school or don’t go to school to work to help support their family.  A lot of these families can’t find work right in Santo Domingo so they work on farms far away from their homes. They will work for 15 to 20 days and then go home for a couple of days to be with their families and then go back to work again away from their families.  Our church has a holistic approach to evangelizing to the people. We are training disciples to make disciples. Most people have a wrong perspective of who Jesus is so we focus on teaching the Jesus of the bible.

The reason why we are starting this program is because we have found a need that we can help solve. This need is that kids are dropping out of school at an early age, some of them have never been to school. So a lot of them don’t know how to read or write, just like their parents. Therefore, education in this barrio is not very important. If their child doesn’t want to go to school they are encouraged to drop out and work. The problem is that there is a new law that you have to have your High School diploma in order to find any job. But since their parents don’t have an education they feel that their children don’t need one either. All of them struggle to be able to pay for their children to go to school, for example, school supplies, books, uniforms, copies etc.   We want to give these children an opportunity to change their future and break the cycle of poverty. Our goal is to raise $35 a month per child.  We have a place for them to come before or after school to get help with their homework, we have three teachers and a nurse on staff. We have internet, computers and a copy machine available for them.    We are teaching values, health issues and also giving them spiritual guidance, not only for the children but their parents as well.  Once a month a workshop is held for the parents.
